I can't believe that Thomas is 2 months old today! I've snapped his picture to mark the occasion but will wait until his 2 Month doctor appointment to post everything. In the meantime, I want to record some of the details from Thomas' birth and this seems to be the appropriate place to do so. Here's a warning, there are a few pics that probably would have grossed me out before I had a babe. I did the best I could to edit but scroll at your own risk. And so much for waterproof mascara...
For the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy, Andy told the baby to "stay put until we have moved out of the apartment!" Well, Thomas obeyed but didn't leave much time to spare. Andy moved the last load of stuff from the apartment to our house at 4 o'clock on Sunday, March 24. He was exhausted after a big moving weekend and we settled into bed early. At 10pm, Andy was watching the end of a March Madness basketball game when I shot out of bed and said "I'm not kidding!! I think my water just broke!" After debating if my water had really broken or if it was just an accident :), I finally called the doctor. Since I wasn't having contractions, she said I could wait at home for a bit or go straight to the hospital. Regardless, she wanted me to go to the hospital by midnight. We decided to wait at home for a little while, mainly because we still hadn't packed our hospital bags (oops). After we were packed up, we found ourselves sitting on the bed, each on our iPads trying to pass the time, and we looked at each other and said let's just head to the hospital.
We loaded up the car and headed towards the hospital. The weather was starting to get nasty as a late season snow storm was rolling in. Since it was close to midnight, it didn't affect us (just what I would have needed...) but by morning there was quite a dusting of snow on the ground.

Andy was truly convinced that it was a false alarm-- he first left the car parked outside the emergency room, not bothering to park. Then after I was taken up to Labor & Delivery, he moved the car but still didn't bring in any of our bags. Thankfully it wasn't a false alarm! The nurse confirmed I was in labor but only about 1cm dilated (not much progress from my prior week appointment). I had started having contractions, but they were quite mild. This was the beginning of what I later realized was a lot of waiting around.
By 2:30 am, the contractions were what I described as a 6 out of 10 on the little pain chart. I really wanted to say they were closer to an 8, but I didn't want to be a wimp. Regardless, I wanted the epidural as soon as possible. The doctor had already scheduled the anesthesiologist for 3am and that was that, even though I asked the nurse if he could come earlier. The epidural went smoothly for me... for Andy not so much. Something about standing up, holding me steady while the stick a big needle in my back didn't sit well with him, but he hung in there like a champ. It wasn't until it was all over that I looked up and he had beads of sweat all over his face. Poor guy (little did he know, that was just the beginning).
The epidural didn't really slow down my progress and things kept moving along throughout the early morning. Around 5am we alerted my parents. I knew my mom would be awake and might check me on g-lat and see that I was at the hospital. There was no hanging around the condo for them! They packed up and headed to the hospital to get ahead of rush hour in the unexpected snow storm. At a more reasonable hour, we updated Andy's parents who headed to the hospital to wait it out.
There's not much to report from the early morning hours. I slept (thanks to the epidural). Andy tried to sleep, but I don't think he was too successful (wonder why?!). I think the most surprising thing about the delivery was how infrequently we saw the doctor. Thankfully we were in the very capable hands of the nurses at Sibley, including
Jennifer.
Between 10am and noon, my progress slowed down which was frustrating because I was 9.5cm... so close to the magic number 10cm! Different nurses tried different tricks but nothing was working until the nurse who was substituting during the lunch hour had me turn on my side. The was just what I needed and around noon it was time to start pushing.
This is probably when Andy didn't realize just how involved he was going to be! It was just Jennifer and Andy helping me. I'd been pushing for close to an hour and a half when Andy started getting nervous. He later said he was thinking "I've seen this in movies and there are always a lot of people in the room... I know this nurse is capable but where's the doctor?!". Before Andy had to voice his concerns, Jennifer decided it was just about time and called in Dr. Green. As Andy said, the doctor is really just the "closer"... comes in for the last few minutes and gets all the glory! Kind of true but obviously we were happy to have Dr. Green there for the delivery. She made sure those last few pushes really counted and when I screamed "I CAN'T DO THIS ANY MORE" she took that to heart and got the baby out (not quite sure how as she didn't use the forceps or vacuum).

Precious Thomas Joseph Peden arrived at 2:05pm on Monday, March 25, 2013. It's amazing how much you can love someone within seconds of meeting them. While the doctor finished up the delivery procedures on me, Andy watched while they tested, weighed and measured Thomas on the other side of the room. Then I got my first Mama snuggles before Baby Boy was ready to eat! He came into the world hungry and it still hasn't stopped.

We are beyond blessed.
